Irish Studies Collections

With the help of multiple endowed library collections, Irish Studies within the Hesburgh Libraries has experienced major growth recently. One noted acquisition was that of the papers of Irish writer Patrick McCabe. McCabe, a contemporarily writer, is particularly known for his works The Butcher Boy and Breakfast on Pluto, both of which have been adapted to film. His works tend to be set in small-town Ireland and grapple with themes of violence and human darkness, and have been short-listed for the Booker Prize twice.

Another noted initiative made possible through named library collections was “Tír na nÓg: Literature for Young People from the Hesburgh Libraries’ Irish Collections,” a fall 2013 exhibit named after the mythical world that features in the Fenian cycle of Irish tales. The exhibit focused on the various forms of children’s literature alive in Irish studies. With works spanning centuries, the exhibit demonstrated how children’s literature changes over time—from moralistic tales with explicit purposes, to stories meant to amuse and delight, to those centered around pastoral life and adventures that have shaped the Irish literary imagination. The event also highlighted the Hesburgh Libaries continued efforts to hone both its study in children’s literature at large and its already singular Irish Studies foundation.
